Been driving the’87 Colony Park a bunch and the AOD trans behind the 5.0 is acting up. When warm it seems to sometimes hunt between gears when driving at a steady speed on surface streets. The car will also shudder like the engine is missing at lights, but smooths out if i put it inneutral. And randomly It will shudder when pulling away until it downshifts and drives normally.
I was warned of the AOD issue where the bushing for the trans cable on the throttle body fails and the cable comes loose. However after ordering a new bushing and digging into it the bushing is still intact. The cable is adjustable but i don’t know how it should be adjusted.
Fluid level is good with bright red fluid and no burned smell, so i am at a loss. Does this have a vacuum line or something else to check, or have i gotten into “take it to a shop” territory (auto trans internals are a black box to me).

This should help you.

Try some Lubeguard Red. It’s highly recommended for the AOD, AODE and 4R70w in Ford circles. You may need 2 bottles.
Outside of that you may need to adjust the TV cable.

The TV cable needs to be adjusted correctly for proper AOD operation, as well as proper fluid/level. TV adjust procedure should be available with a quick Google search (I’m on mobile or I’d link for you).

Two things come to mind for the shudder: possible loose spark wire/plug, or the fluid. It may be in good condition, but there’s no telling what type of fluid is in there. I’d feel better replacing it with some fresh Mercon V.
At least, that’s what I would say if this was a 4R70W, which I’m more familiar with. I’d also say to J-Mod the valve body while the pan was off. But even though the 4R70W is basically an updated AOD, I don’t know how much of my 4R70W knowledge still applies.
But I still think a possible misfire is worth checking out, though. Along with that cable adjustment.

I’d do a fluid and filter change for starters. The TV adjustment procedure is tricky, but it can be found with a quick Google Search.
What do you mean by hunting? These things were calibrated to upshift as quickly as possible, and they love to try to give you 4th gear lockup at 25 mph under light acceleration, and with a 4k# car, 150hp and 3.08 gears-that doesn’t work so well. The best thing to do is to leave it in drive unless you’re driving above 45mph for a decent amount of time. Besides, the overdrive band is much weaker than all the others, so keeping it from unnecessarily shifting in and out of overdrive will extend transmission life.
